Orthodox Author's Association
"Serving writers and the reading community"

The Orthodox Author's Association invites Orthodox writers to join us in our ministry of leading souls to salvation through the writtenword.

The goals of the OAA are:
  • To support and encourage writers
  • To provide an Orthodox perspective on the world around us through the written word
  • To create works that open windows to a vision of the Divine (iconographic writing)
  • To reach out to modern youth

We are open to writers from all quarters of the Orthodox world. One need not be Orthodox to join; one need only be willing to work in an Orthodox context.

The Association was founded with the blessing of Abbot Herman of the Saint Herman Brotherhood, who continues to provide guidance. Because of this, there is a transmissional aspect to the OAA. Our heavenly patrons are Elder Nectary of Optina and Saint Romanus the Melodist.

OAA members share a commitment to pray for each other and for group projects. Prayer and letters allow people to participate from far away. The OAA sponsored a writers' conference in October, 1998 at Saint Paisius Abbey. (Another conference at the Abbey is planned for October, 1999.) We have published our first zine and have other projects in progress. It is our hope that other chapters will develop around the country.

We have found the OAA to be a tremendous blessing in our lives, more than justifying the amount of time we put into it. We invite you to join us.

Your Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The OAA - Eugene OR Chapter

"Being around the OAA has enabled me to write. I won't be talked out of it anymore. That relentless input-either from prayers or by talking with other members-really, really works."

OAA member Agafia Prince
Ladder of Divine Ascent
"There are three purposes for which gifted men write without fault...as memoranda for themselves ...for the benefit of others ...or for obedience. With this last purpose many writings have been composed for those who humbly seek the truth. But he who writes to please men, for fame or display, loses his reward and will receive no profit from this either here or in the life to come; more he will be condemned as a sycophant and a wicked poacher of the Word of God."
