The Library is not the largest building in the Square, but it may be the deepest. Its stacks extend further than any catalogue fully accounts for, and the archivist — a quiet, precise woman who has held the post for longer than anyone can remember — insists that the collection continues to grow whether or not new volumes are acquired.

The reading rooms are open to all, free of charge, on the understanding that silence is kept, that books are handled with care, and that no candle is ever left unattended. The light from the clerestory windows is excellent in the morning.

The Collection

Philosophy, history, natural history, poetry, theology, practical arts — the collection has no preference and no prejudice. Every book that has found its way here has been given a home. The archivist will find anything you need, if you give her a day's notice and describe what you are looking for rather than what you expect to find.
